High transparency Pr:Y2O3 ceramics: A promising gain medium for red emission solid-state lasers

Abstract Highly transparent 0.5 and 1.0 at% Pr-doped Y 2 O 3 ceramics were fabricated by vacuum sintering plus hot isostatic pressing (HIP) treatment. The selection of suitable pre-sintering temperatures right microstructures before HIP was critical to obtain high density the final sintered bodies. well-densified had pore-free with an average grain size about 1 µm. It also found that charge states Pr ions could be changed through regulating annealing atmospheres, resulting in different absorption emission characteristics visible wavelength region. Annealing reducing atmosphere (5% H /95% Ar) favored formation 3+ , stronger red emissions, while oxygen led rise lattice constant due concentration increase interstitials. /Ar-annealed Pr:Y exhibited strong at 600–675 nm, which may a promising gain material for solid-state lasers.
